Girls Preps: Governor’s rises to the top

The Prep School soccer scene may be on hold for much of the week as Hurricane Sandy has hammered the region. Most Wednesday matches have been postponed or canceled and the continuing wet weather may leave fields unplayable the rest of the week.
The ESR Prep School rankings will be released every other week throughout the fall high school season.

Schools in this ranking are not eligible for the ESR Top 50 high school rankings because these schools either field post-grad players or compete in a league with post-grad and fifth-year players or plays a schedule of post-grad programs.

Rankings through matches played as of Oct. 28, 2012

Rk. School (City, State) Record Prev.
1 Governor’s Academy 9-0-2 4
Governor’s defeated Brooks and former No. 1 Nobles in a 48-hour window to leap from No. 4 to No. 1 this week. Kendall Ham delivered the game-winner in the 2-1 victory over Brooks. Hayley Newhall netted the winner against Nobles.
2 Rivers School (Weston, Mass.) 10-0-2 3
Rivers School has posted seven straight shutouts, and its draw with Governor’s puts it in the conversation for overall No. 1.
3 Noble and Greenough (Dedham, Mass.) 8-1-2 1
Nobles’ 1-0 loss to Governor’s drops this team from the top spot.
4 Loomis Chaffee (Windsor, Conn.) 11-1-0 2
Although Loomis has won 11 straight since a season-opening loss to Nobles, Nobles’ loss to undefeated Governor’s Academy pushes this team down a few spots this week.
5 Brooks School (North Andover, Mass.) 11-2-1 5
Brooks School’s losses this year are to No. 1 Governor’s and No. 2 Rivers School.
6 Wilbraham and Monson (Wilbraham, Mass.) 10-1-2 6
Wilbraham’s 1-0 loss to Loomis keeps this team in the bottom half of the Top 10.
7 Worcester Academy (Worcester, Mass.) 6-1-6 7
The lack of losses keeps Worcester in the rankings … the high number of ties keeps it outside the Top 5.
8 Hotchkiss School (Lakeville, Conn.) 9-2-2 8
Hotchkiss’ 1-0 loss to Worcester marks the only goal allowed in the past five matches for this perennial title challenger.
9 Berkshire School (Sheffield, Mass.) 7-2-1 9
Berkshire is riding a five-match undefeated run and likely will not face a ranked team until the playoffs.
10 Deerfield Academy (Deerfield, Mass.) 8-3-1 10
Deerfield Academy is making a case for “Turnaround of the Year.” The team’s eight wins in 2012 already trumped the five wins it posted in 2011.
