Weekend Recap: Capo Valley, San Ramon Valley deliver major wins

Nearly 20 ESR Top 50 girls’ soccer teams were in action this past weekend at various high school tournaments in the West. Capistrano Valley (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and San Ramon Valley (Danville, Calif.) won the two premier events – Excalibur and the Tri-Valley Classic – on Saturday.

The final of the Arizona Showcase is scheduled for Monday.

Below is a recap of the weekend’s key events:

CHAMPIONSHIP: Capistrano Valley (Mission Viejo, Calif.) 1, Edison (Huntington Beach, Calif.) 0: Casey Murphy’s second-half goal carried ESR No. 14 Capistrano Valley to a win over Edison, which knocked off three nationally ranked opponents en route to the final. The victory marked Capistrano Valley’s first Excalibur title since 1999 and the program’s third overall.
MOVING UP: Edison defeated Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, Calif.), Westview (San Diego, Calif.) and Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland, Calif.) in the second, third and fourth rounds. The showing will land Edison an ESR Top 50 ranking when the next rankings are released, which will be Jan. 1.
OVERVIEW: Bishop O’Dowd and Los Osos (Los Osos, Calif.), which played in the third-place contest, secured their ranking among the nation’s elite with a strong overall performance. … San Clemente edged Temecula Valley 1-0 in the fifth-place match, earning both a place in the ESR Top 50. … First-round exits by Xavier College Prep (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Stockdale (Bakersfield, Calif.) once again reinforced the strength of the Southern Section relative to teams visiting programs. Bishop O’Dowd and Cathedral Catholic were the only non-Southern Section programs to post winning records at the event.

CHAMPIONSHIP: San Ramon Valley (Danville, Calif.) 2, Buchanan (Clovis, Calif.) 0. San Ramon Valley’s victory keeps the team undefeated and in the ESR Winter national title chase.
MOVING UP: Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) went 1-0-2 in group play, which included a tie with eventual champion San Ramon Valley. Since Mitty finished second in the group behind San Ramon Valley, it was sent to the third-place match, which it won to remain undefeated overall this season.
OVERVIEW: Although Santa Margarita (Rancho SM, Calif.) has not performed up to expectations this season, the team’s 1-1-2 showing helps validate San Ramon Valley (which beat Santa Margarita) and Mitty in the national rankings.

SEMIFINALS: Pinnacle (Phoenix, Ariz.), Desert Vista (Phoenix, Ariz.), Highland (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Rosary (Fullerton, Calif.)
OVERVIEW: The semifinal contests will be played Monday morning with the championship match in the afternoon. Rosary was 4-4-3 against Southern California team, but is 3-0-1 in the Arizona Showcase. If Rosary wins the event, coupled with Xavier Prep’s 1-2 showing at Excalibur, it may banish all Arizona programs from the ESR Top 50. Pinnacle and Desert Vista, both undefeated, are the event favorites, yet will play in Monday’s semifinals.

CHAMPIONSHIPS: South Torrance (Torrance, Calif.) 2, Downey (Downey, Calif.) 0; Corona del Mar (Newport Beach, Calif.) 1, La Serna (Whittier, Calif.) 0; Upland (Upland, Calif.) 5, Santiago (Corona, Calif.) 1; Chino Hills (Chino Hills, Calif.) 1, Troy (Fullerton, Calif.) 0.
OVERVIEW: South Torrance, Corona del Mar and Chino Hills were already ESR Top 50 teams, and all three claimed NOCC titles. South Torrance, which had a NOCC semifinal victory over Sunny Hills, remains undefeated and will jump higher in the ESR Top 50 rankings.

CHAMPIONSHIP: Alta Loma (Alta Loma, Calif.) 1, Flintridge Prep (La Canada, Calif.) 0 (PKs): Charlee Pruitt had seven saves in regulation and two in the shootout, leading Alta Loma to the title in the 16-team event.
