Boys ESR Top 50: Jan. 29

TOP STORY: Ties, ties, ties! Most weeks, a tie might result in a slight move down. This week, with three of the top five teams playing matches that ended in draws, the net result was little change at the top. However, it starts to get interesting this week as Florida teams move into regional play, Arizona teams start postseason play and Mississippi public schools bring its season to a close.

BIG MOVER: Langham Creek (Houston, Texas). Of the previously ranked teams, Langham Creek made the largest jump, moving up nine spots powered by an undefeated start.

NEWCOMERS: No. 23 Buchholz (Gainesville, Fla.), No. 28 Marcus (Flower Mound, Texas), No. 46 Sunlake (Land O’Lakes, Fla.), No. 47 Cypress Bay (Weston, Fla.), No. 48 Cathedral (Los Angeles, Calif.), No. 49 JSerra (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and No. 50 American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.).

NOTES: The winter season includes the following states: Arizona, California (winter), Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

Rankings through matches played as of Jan. 27, 2013

Rk. School (City, State) Record Prev.
1 Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) 25-0-1 1
Season complete. Berkeley Prep Holiday Invitational and Montverde Academy Soccer Tournament champions.
School Facts: Private, 1,000 students in grades PK-12.
Notes: Montverde Academy ran its undefeated streak to 78 matches with a third straight undefeated season. The Eagles defeated programs from four states, including Top 10-ranked Brophy Prep (Ariz.) and Coppell (Texas). Top junior prospect Diego Campos led the team with 24 goals and five assists. Saul Bonilla, Jahquan Smith Deshields, Simeon Wickli, Thales Moreno and Gerard Arguedas each scored 10 or more goals as the Eagles outscored their opponents 125-4. Montverde has six players committed to NCAA Division I programs: Quintonio Lema (UNC Greensboro), Andrew Hickey (Fordham), Mauriq Hill, Moreno and Alexandre Happi (Clemson) and Sanitago Ortiz (Florida Gulf Coast).
Fun Fact: Montverde has the chance to become the first school to claim national No. 1 rankings in boys’ soccer and boys’ basketball in the season. While the school has become known as a soccer-basketball power, it also has produced two high-round Major League Baseball draft picks in the past three years, including first-rounder Francisco Lindor in 2011.
2 Alief Elsik (Houston, Texas) 7-0-2 2
Kayode George scored in both matches last week, a 4-0 win of KIPP and a 2-2 draw with Cinco Ranch.
3 Alisal (Salinas, Calif.) 12-0-2 3
Santiago Morales scored the only goal as Alisal edged Salinas. However, a few days later, the top-ranked California team was held to a draw by Gilroy.
4 El Toro (Lake Forest, Calif.) 21-1-1 5
Nick DiMato scored twice during El Toro’s 3-3 draw with Dana Hills last week.
5 Carlsbad (Carlsbad, Calif.) 17-2-1 4
Carlsbad suffered a 1-0 setback to state-ranked La Costa Canyon last week, but gets a bit of a pass in the rankings for now since it does own a convincing win over San Clemente. However, another Carlsbad loss will result in a tumble in the rankings.
6 San Clemente (San Clemente, Calif.) 23-2-1 6
Blayne Martinez and Gage Zerboni continue to pace San Clemente, perhaps the hottest active team in the Top 10. Martinez scored twice during the team’s 3-0 win over Tesoro. Zerboni netted a goal against Tesoro and scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Aliso Niguel.
7 Brophy Prep (Phoenix, Ariz.) 19-2-0 7
Brophy Prep is the top seed for the Arizona Division I playoffs and opens Wednesday against No. 16 seed Tucson. Brophy, which is undefeated against Arizona teams, outscored its last four regular-season opponents 33-2.
8 Coppell (Coppell, Texas) 6-1-0 8
Coppell jumped out to a 3-0 lead before settling on a 3-2 win over McKinney Boyd in a battle of ranked teams.
9 El Rancho (Pico Rivera, Calif.) 17-1-1 9
El Rancho was idle last week.
10 Boca Raton (Boca Raton, Fla.) 21-2-0 10
Central Florida commit Gio DiMauro scored twice in Boca Raton’s 5-1 district final win over John I. Leonard. Boca has won 11 straight district titles and now aims for a second state title in four seasons.
11 Paramount (Paramount, Calif.) 12-3-3 11
Paramount capped the week with an 8-0 thrashing of Gahr.
12 Loyola (Los Angeles, Calif.) 20-2-2 12
Loyola has won 13 straight matches following wins last week over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame and Chaminade.
13 Lewisville (Lewisville, Texas) 9-0-1 15
Brandon Tenorio scored twice as Lewisville held off W.T. White 3-2 in the team’s lone match last week.
14 Lafayette (Lafayette, La.) 18-1-2 18
Lafayette closed out the week with a 2-1 win over St. Thomas More to run its win streak to 13 and its undefeated streak to 19 matches. Lafayette very well could get the top seed for the Division I state playoffs but will be playing against history. It’s been several years since a public school has won the Division I crown in Louisiana.
15 Berkeley (Berkeley, Calif.) 15-1-3 19
Berkeley ran its win streak to 13 matches with a 2-1 win over Mt. Eden, which secured the West Alameda County title. Berkeley is in line for a possible No. 1 seed for the upcoming section playoffs.
16 Ramona (Ramona, Calif.) 16-1-2 20
Andrew Garcia led Ramona with two goals and two assists last week in wins over Valley Center and Del Norte.
17 Sunny Hills (Fullerton, Calif.) 16-1-0 21
Gerardo Arias netted the lone goal in Sunny Hills’ 1-0 win over Fullerton.
18 Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.) 13-1-3 25
Mitty extended its league lead with a 2-0 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral, which came on the heels of losses by St. Frances and St. Ignatius.

Kingwood received goals from five players en route to wins over Atascocita and Klein Oak last week.
20 Langham Creek (Houston, Texas) 9-0-1 29
David Carey, Fernando Cardona and Israel Ortega scored goals as Langham Creek remained undefeated with a 3-1 win over College Park.
21 Salpointe Catholic (Tucson, Ariz.) 21-2-0 23
Despite a sparkling overall record where the team’s losses are to Division I Brophy Prep and Division II rival Catalina Foothills (which it also beat three times), Salpointe starts from the No. 4 spot in the Arizona Division II playoffs.
22 Acalanes (Lafayette, Calif.) 16-0-3 26
In a week where ties were prevalent, Acalanes’ ability not to lose (I.e. a draw with league rival Miramonte) resulted in a four-spot jump.
23 Buchholz (Gainesville, Fla.) 15-1-4 NR
Buchholz is back in the Top 25 after a series of upsets in Florida, coupled with this team’s district title-winning effort last week. Buchholz is responsible for the only blemish on Montverde Academy’s record this year with an early season draw.
24 Bel Air (El Paso, Texas) 8-0-2 13
Bel Air remains undefeated, but a pair of draws with unranked opponents causes a slide down in this week’s rankings.
25 Crescenta Valley (La Crescenta, Calif.) 15-2-6 30
Crescenta Valley limps into the Top 25, going 1-1-2 in its last four matches. However, an overall strong season — with only an additional loss to Loyola — is enough to keep this team climbing for another week.
26 Ironwood (Glendale, Ariz.) 19-1-2 32
27 Palos Verdes (Palos Verdes, Calif.) 17-2-2 35
28 Marcus (Flower Mound, Texas) 7-1-1 NR
